Let me interrupt my usual rants and random thoughts by enlisting your support of World Habitat Day, Monday, October 4, 2010. The United Nations has declared this week of events to publicize the poor housing options facing poverty stricken people around the world. Our support of this work and the mission of Habitat for Humanity will further raise awareness of and provide advocacy for the millions of people living in the most extreme population centers worldwide.
Facts, figures, promotional data, and information regarding specified city events and Habitat activities can be accessed at a Habitat web presence here. There are a good many ways each of us can participate in and support World Habitat Day. Take a moment to tour the web page and review several of the ways you can help.
A few months ago I read The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns. Without a doubt, this book is the most convicting book I have read in a long time. Asking, what does God expect of us?, this book is a reflection of the work of World Vision, Inc., and a powerful indictment of our ministry to the poor, especially the hungry. Jesus spoke often of the Christian response to poverty, our care of those less fortunate than ourselves.
Our call to care for the hungry is but one element of our greater call to poverty stricken people. Habitat for Humanity has already mobilized the resources, materials, and funding for providing housing tgo people living in sub-standard conditions. Manpower support is one way for each of us to assist. So, please read the available information and help where you can.
Oh, yes. And, pray too. That's something every single one of us can do.
Thanks.
